A pro-NPP group, the Patriotic Movement for Bawumia, has expressed its disappointment and disapproval of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the chosen running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The group, comprising grassroots members, polling station agents, and constituency and regional executives, has cited Dr. Prempeh’s previous public utterances as a major concern.
According to the group, Dr. Prempeh’s responses to the power crisis in the country were unsatisfactory and did not resonate with the populace. They claim that his attitude and humility are not in line with the party’s values and image.
The leader of the group, Ebenezer Nyamekye, stated that Dr. Prempeh’s comments during his tenure at the Ministry of Energy were unacceptable and would make it difficult for the group to market him at the grassroots level.
The group has petitioned the party’s National Executive Council to reconsider the choice of running mate, alleging that Dr. Prempeh was imposed on Dr. Bawumia. They claim that no candidate has ever been forced on the party as a running mate, and this move goes against the party’s tradition.
The group has appealed to Dr. Bawumia to present a running mate of his own choice, one who embodies the same character and attitude as the flagbearer. They believe that this would enjoy the support of the grassroots members.
The petition was received by the Ashanti Regional Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party, Paul Yandou, who promised to submit it to the appropriate authority for further action. The group’s move has sparked debate within the party, with some members supporting the group’s stance while others have defended Dr. Prempeh’s selection.
Dr. Bawumia’s decision to choose Dr. Prempeh as his running mate has been seen as a strategic move, but the group’s opposition may pose a challenge to the party’s unity.
The Patriotic Movement for Bawumia has vowed to withhold their support if Dr. Prempeh remains the running mate, citing their inability to market him effectively at the grassroots level. The development has added a new twist to the party’s preparations for the upcoming elections, with many calling for a resolution to the impasse to ensure the party’s unity and success.
