A police officer in the Eastern Cape was tragically killed during an ambush in Tlokoeng (formerly Mount Fletcher).
According to Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, the constable was shot and killed around 8:30 pm on Thursday while on duty.
The identity of the deceased officer has not been disclosed.
“SAPS Eastern Cape management received the distressing news of the police constable’s murder in Tlokoeng with shock and outrage,” said Mawisa.
She explained that two constables were on duty in the Mjamba area when they were attacked by five armed men in a Corsa bakkie.
“One suspect exited the vehicle and opened fire on the officers, fatally injuring one constable in the upper body,” Mawisa stated.
The assailants then proceeded to a nearby tavern where they robbed the owner of a firearm, an unspecified amount of cash, and liquor. They subsequently hijacked a VW Polo Vivo to escape the scene.
The suspects remain at large and are also in possession of police firearms.
