Leeds Sell Young Star Gray To Spurs To Comply With Financial Regulations

Leeds United have confirmed the transfer of highly-rated midfielder Archie Gray to Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth around £30 million.

This move comes after Leeds failed to secure promotion back to the Premier League through the Championship playoffs. The sale triggers a release clause in Gray’s contract, ensuring financial compliance with profit and sustainability rules for Leeds.

The 18-year-old impressed last season, featuring in 52 matches across all competitions. He had even begun a medical at Brentford before Spurs emerged with a successful offer, reportedly containing a more favorable payment structure and add-ons.

Gray, who can also play right-back, is an England U21 international and the great-nephew of Leeds legend Eddie Gray. While acknowledging the disappointment of supporters, Leeds emphasized the financial necessity of the deal.

“The move improves the club’s chance to compete for automatic promotion next season by increasing our ability to build a competitive squad within the league’s financial control regulations,” the club stated.

“Everyone at Leeds United is heartbroken to see one of our own depart and would like to thank Archie for all his efforts and professionalism.”

In a separate deal, Wales defender Joe Rodon, who spent last season on loan at Leeds, has signed a permanent four-year contract with the Yorkshire club.
