- Protest to start at Obra Spot, Circle, and end at Ministry of Finance with 400+ participants
The Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) has announced a protest on Wednesday, July 10, against the newly imposed 5% excise tax on locally produced plastic products. The Association had earlier requested the government to suspend the tax, threatening a seven-day production shutdown if their demands are not met.
At a press conference, GPMA President Ebbo Botwe emphasized the need for the government to reconsider its position and engage with stakeholders to prevent economic fallout. However, the government’s failure to address the Association’s demand has led to the planned protest.
In collaboration with the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers and Plastic Sellers Association of Ghana, the protest will start at Obra Spot at Circle, proceed to Accra Technical University, and end at the Ministry of Finance. Over 400 participants are expected to join the demonstration.
“We urge all members to partake in the demonstration to have their concerns addressed,” the Association stated. The protest is a last resort after the government’s failure to suspend the tax, which the Association believes will harm the local plastic industry.
