Berhalter Vows Improvement Despite Early Copa America Exit
- Berhalter remains confident in his ability
- This commitment echoes his resolve
- Uruguay progress to the quarter-finals
United States head coach Gregg Berhalter is determined to learn from a disappointing Copa America group stage exit, insisting he remains the right person to guide the team towards the 2026 World Cup on home soil.
A 1-0 defeat to Uruguay confirmed the US’s elimination, leaving them with just one win from their three matches. “We’re extremely disappointed with the results,” Berhalter admitted. “We have the capability to perform better, and we simply didn’t show it at this tournament.”
However, Berhalter remains confident in his ability to lead the team forward. When questioned about his suitability for the 2026 World Cup, he firmly responded, “Yes.”
This commitment echoes his resolve after being re-appointed in June 2023 following an internal investigation. “We can’t dwell on this,” Berhalter emphasized. “This doesn’t mean the program is failing. We underperformed, and we need to improve.”
While Berhalter maintains his focus on the future, US Soccer acknowledges the shortcomings. Sporting director Matt Crocker stated, “The team’s performance fell short of expectations. We must do better moving forward.”
A comprehensive review of the Copa America campaign will be conducted to identify areas for improvement before the 2026 World Cup.
Meanwhile, Uruguay, who dominated their group, progress to the quarter-finals, while Panama joins them after their own group stage victory.
