Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has proposed a 10% quota for cadet students to be recruited into security services upon completion of their schooling. This initiative aims to address the manpower needs of security agencies in Ghana, leveraging the discipline and knowledge gained through cadet training.
Dr. Bawumia made this proposal during the 64th Republic Day celebrations and 70th anniversary of the cadet corps in Ghana. He emphasized the importance of recognizing and harnessing the talents of young people, citing the success of cadet corps and sister volunteer groups.
The Vice President suggested designating July 1st as National Youth Day in Ghana, acknowledging the lack of a dedicated day for youth in the country. He encouraged security agencies to tap into the potential of cadet corps members, highlighting their valuable skills and discipline.
Dr. Bawumia noted that many prominent security chiefs were once members of the cadet corps, demonstrating the benefits of this training. Last year, the national cadet corps requested a 2% quota for recruitment, but Dr. Bawumia believes a minimum of 10% is more appropriate.
The Vice President’s proposal aims to provide opportunities for young people and enhance the capabilities of security services in Ghana. By recognizing and supporting the contributions of cadet corps members, Ghana can harness their talents and promote national development.
