The National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council (NC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have scheduled emergency meetings for Thursday, July 4, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. According to the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the meetings will address pressing matters within the party.
While the agenda for the meetings remains undisclosed, they coincide with a significant development in the party’s preparations for the 2024 general elections. Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has nominated Energy Minister and Manhyia lawmaker Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as his running mate.
National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye announced the nomination on Facebook on July 1, stating that Dr. Bawumia had formally informed national officers of his decision. The nomination was previously presented to the majority caucus of Parliament, but requires approval from the National Council, the party’s final approving organ.
The NEC and National Council meetings are expected to discuss and potentially endorse Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s nomination as the party’s vice presidential candidate. The meetings come at a critical time for the NPP, as the party prepares for the upcoming elections and works to resolve internal issues.
The outcome of the meetings may have significant implications for the party’s unity and strategy heading into the 2024 polls. As the NPP works to solidify its ticket and campaign strategy, the meetings on Thursday are expected to be intense and consequential for the party’s future.
