The 2024 fishing closed season commences today, July 1, and will last until July 31 for artisanal and inshore fleets, while industrial fleets will be affected until August 31.

Mrs. Koomson, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, urged fishermen to treat the sea with care, likening it to a human being that requires protection to sustain livelihoods and survival for generations to come.

“The compliance levels for this year’s closed season will be strictly enforced and monitored by all stakeholders, including security agencies,” she emphasized. Fisher folks have expressed support for the initiative, anticipating better results.

The Ministry, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization and the Norwegian government, is conducting research on marine resources to inform decisions on replenishing depleting stocks and improving fishing practices.

The Norwegian research vessel, RV Fridtjof Nansen, is currently conducting a transboundary survey to gather data on current stocks.
