Electricity and Water Tariff To Increase By 5.8% 5.1% Today

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a tariff adjustment for residential use, resulting in a 5.8% increase in electricity costs and a 5.1% rise in water prices, effective immediately.

According to the PURC, the increment is attributed to various factors, including the depreciation of the cedi, inflation, fuel costs, and electricity generation mix.

In a statement released on May 31, the PURC disclosed that lifeline consumers will experience a 3.45% increase in electricity tariffs, while all other residential consumers will face a 5.84% increase. The industrial category will see a 4.92% rise in electricity tariffs.

PURC Executive Secretary, Ishmael Ackah, explained that the reviews were conducted in accordance with the Commission’s Quarterly Tariff Review Mechanism, which considers key uncontrollable factors such as exchange rates, domestic inflation, electricity generation mix, and fuel costs.

The Commission also took into account the competitiveness of industries and the general living conditions of Ghanaians in arriving at this review.

“The reviews were undertaken in line with the Commission’s Quarterly Tariff Review Mechanism, which tracks and incorporates movements in key uncontrollable factors…,” the PURC said.
