The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced plans to register eligible inmates in collaboration with the Ghana Prisons Service, ahead of the 2024 general elections.
This initiative will be carried out during a mop-up registration exercise scheduled from August 1 to August 3, 2024, across all district offices of the Commission.
The EC revealed these plans during a press briefing held in Accra after a meeting with the National Peace Council. The closed-door meeting focused on enhancing peace and cooperation among political entities, citizens, institutions, and other stakeholders throughout the electoral process.
Chairperson of the EC, Mrs. Jean Mensa, emphasized the Commission’s commitment to conducting transparent, fair, and credible elections.
She highlighted the importance of engaging stakeholders like the Peace Council to build trust and ensure transparency in electoral operations.
Regarding the registration of prison inmates, Mrs. Mensa assured that the EC is coordinating closely with the Prisons Service to gather necessary data for effective planning.
Reverend Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Peace Council, described the meeting as productive, emphasizing the need for continuous communication and transparency from the EC to foster trust among political parties and the public.
The EC previously conducted a voter registration exercise from May 7 to May 29, 2024, followed by a nationwide effort to replace lost voter ID cards starting on May 30, 2024. Voter transfers have also been completed as part of preparations for the upcoming elections on December 7, 2024.
