18-Year-Old Commits Suicide In Police Cell

Mbornlen Abass, known as Agogo, tragically took his own life while detained in a police cell in Bimbilla, located in the Nanumba North District of the Northern Region.

According to report Abass, aged 18, allegedly hanged himself after being arrested following accusations of stealing GH¢2,000 from Pinimkpel Nampar on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

Despite vehemently denying the theft allegations, Abass was kept in police custody overnight. Sources revealed that an officer had left briefly to fetch food for Abass and upon returning, found him unresponsive to calls. Upon opening the cell, Abass was discovered lifeless, suspended from the ceiling using a blanket.

His body was subsequently transported to Bimbilla Hospital for preservation, and authorities, including Regional and Divisional Police Commanders, visited the scene on Wednesday, June 27. Abass has since been laid to rest.
