The Police have launched an investigation into an alleged attack on staff at Suhum Government Hospital by family members of a deceased person. The incident occurred at the hospital’s emergency ward on Wednesday, June 26, and saw health professionals physically assaulted with sliding windows.
According to sources, the deceased, a 29-year-old miner, was involved in an accident near Top Oil fuel station in Suhum while returning from Accra to Anyinam. He was rushed to Suhum Hospital for treatment but later passed away while on admission.
The family of the deceased accused hospital staff of negligence and failing to refer him to the Eastern Regional Hospital for further treatment. Friends of the deceased stormed the facility, physically assaulting nurses on duty, but timely police intervention prevented the situation from escalating.
A family member described the incident, stating that the deceased was able to talk and communicate while receiving treatment, but his condition worsened, and he was referred to another hospital. Staff at the hospital were left traumatized, with a security personnel witnessing the attack and describing how the family and friends of the deceased attacked staff indiscriminately.
