Two-time Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson-Herah will miss the Paris Games due to an Achilles injury.
The 31-year-old Jamaican superstar sustained the injury at a competition in New York on June 9th, forcing her to be carried off the track. This setback ends her hopes of defending her 100m title in Paris.
Thompson-Herah, a dominant force alongside Usain Bolt, is the only other sprinter to achieve the feat of winning multiple Olympic golds in both the 100m and 200m events. She had opted out of the Jamaican trials for the 200m, focusing on retaining her 100m crown.
“A small tear on my Achilles tendon” has unfortunately dashed those dreams, Thompson-Herah wrote on social media. While devastated to miss the Olympics, she prioritizes her health and remains determined to recover fully and continue her track career.
Jamaica’s reign in the women’s 100m, boasting four consecutive Olympic gold medals, will face a new challenger in Paris due to Thompson-Herah’s absence.
