At Least 20 Female Factory Workers Raped in Nigeria’s Enugu State

A devastating incident has occurred in Enugu State, where at least 20 young women working at a nylon-producing factory in Akegbeugwu community, Nkanu West Local Government Area, were raped on Tuesday night.

According to sources, the victims were on night duties when the assailants stormed the factory, owned by an Anambra-born entrepreneur, and perpetrated the heinous act. The attackers also stole the victims’ handsets, money, and other valuables.

A source revealed to The Whistler, “The boys came at night. The victims were on night duties when they were attacked. They raped them serially and left when they had done the harms they wanted.”

An okada rider in the community alleged that this was not the first incident of rape in the area, citing weak neighborhood networks and rivalries among stakeholders as contributing factors. “The rapists are suspected to have come from a neighboring community. I don’t think there is a police post in the community.”

Despite the severity of the incident, police in the area claimed that the matter was not reported. However, it is believed that the victims chose not to report their ordeals to avoid being stigmatized.
