Wimbledon In Doubt: Djokovic Prioritizes Title Contention Over Participation

Story Highlights
  • Djokovic's participation remains uncertain
  • He is recovering from knee surgery
  • He described the experience as "great"

Novak Djokovic’s participation in this year’s Wimbledon remains uncertain. The tennis legend is recovering from knee surgery but emphasizes he’ll only play if he can “fight for the title.”

Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, tore his right knee meniscus during the French Open and underwent surgery just a few weeks ago. With Wimbledon starting on July 1st, the clock is ticking for him to make a decision before the draw on Friday.

Encouragingly, Djokovic spent nearly two hours practicing at Wimbledon on Monday, even wearing a supportive bandage on his knee. He described the experience as “great” to be back on the courts at the All England Club.

However, his competitive focus remains clear. “I didn’t come here to play a few rounds,” the 37-year-old told BBC Sport after the practice session. “If I know I can play close to my maximum or at maximum, then I’ll play. If not, then I’ll give somebody else a chance to play.”

This statement suggests Djokovic won’t risk his competitive edge by participating unless he feels confident in his ability to contend for the championship. Tennis fans will have to wait and see if his recovery progresses enough for him to take a shot at his record-breaking eighth Wimbledon title.
