UK Anti-Doping Discovers Boxer Banned Posthumously

Story Highlights

  • Calleros boasted a commendable record
  • He was nearing his 50th professional fight

In an unfortunate turn of events, the UK Anti-Doping agency (Ukad) issued a four-year ban to Mexican boxer Moises Calleros on Monday, only to discover later that he had passed away in March.

Calleros reportedly tested positive for cocaine and its metabolite following his defeat by Olympic champion Galal Yafai in April 2023.

Ukad released a statement announcing the boxer’s suspension but swiftly retracted it upon learning of his passing.

“Ukad received information regarding Mr. Calleros’ passing shortly after publishing the case details,” the anti-doping agency explained. “We unfortunately did not have this information at the time and have removed all details from our channels.”

The 34-year-old Calleros boasted a commendable record of 37 wins, 11 losses, and one draw throughout his professional career that began in 2008.

He competed primarily in the minimumweight and flyweight divisions. While Calleros fell short in his sole world title challenge in 2018, he was nearing his 50th professional fight before his untimely passing.
