Delay In Allowance Disbursement: Ghana Nurse-Midwife Trainees’ Association Sounds Alarm

Story Highlights
  • GNMTA raises alarm over delayed allowance disbursement to trainee nurses and midwives
  • Partial payments made to some trainees, but many batches still await payment
  • Association urges swift action from Ministry of Health and government to address the issue

The Ghana Nurse-Midwife Trainees’ Association (GNMTA) has expressed concern over the delayed payment of allowances to trainee nurses and midwives, despite government promises. In a statement released on Tuesday, June 25, the association acknowledged partial payments made to some members but highlighted the unpaid arrears for the 2022, 2023, and other batches.

The GNMTA described the situation as “unacceptable” and urged the Ministry of Health, government, and relevant authorities to address the issue promptly. The association emphasized that the delayed payments are causing financial hardship and demoralization among trainees, who rely on these funds for sustenance and academic needs.

“The future of Ghana’s healthcare system depends on the well-being and support of its trainees, and timely payment of allowances is a critical component of this support,” the GNMTA stressed. The association called on all Ghanaians to amplify their concerns and pledged to continue advocating for the rights and welfare of its members.

“The reinstatement of the trainee nurses’ allowance was a significant decision aimed at supporting members during their crucial training period. We remain hopeful that this matter will be addressed promptly,” the GNMTA said.
