Zelensky Removes General Yuriy Sodol From Post, Citing No Reason
- Zelensky has replaced Lieutenant General Sodol
- The move follows public criticism and accusations of incompetence
- General Sodol had been in the post since February 2024
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has replaced Lieutenant General Yuriy Sodol as commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, citing no specific reason.
The move comes after public criticism and accusations of incompetence, including a complaint filed by Major Bohdan Krotevych, chief of staff of the Azov Brigade, alleging excessive casualties under General Sodol’s leadership.
Major Krotevych’s widely viewed Telegram post criticized General Sodol’s tactics and praised the appointment of Brigadier General Andriy Hnatov as his successor.
General Sodol had been in the post since February 2024, playing a role in the defense of Mariupol and Volnovakha, both now under Russian control.
The change in leadership reflects Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to adapt to Russia’s advances in the east, despite limited resources.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces have increased attacks on Russian territory, targeting oil refineries and, most recently, occupied Crimea, which Moscow blames Ukraine for.
