Thieves Strike Again: 13th Transformer Stolen in Eastern Region This Year

Thieves have vandalized two Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) transformers in the Eastern Region, stealing copper wires and other materials. This brings the total number of transformer thefts in the region to 13 this year.

The thefts in Bunso and Bukunor have left residents without power for days, affecting local businesses and daily life. “It’s been five days since the electricity went off, and it has affected us in so many ways,” a local resident said. “The Bunso Agric College and the CSIR Plant, along with other businesses that depend on electricity, have all been severely impacted.”

The community is urging authorities to take stronger measures to prevent future incidents and ensure a stable power supply. A 100 kVA transformer is valued at GH¢71,000, highlighting the significant economic impact of these thefts.

The disruption to the power supply has not only affected individual residents but also hindered the operations of educational institutions and research facilities that rely heavily on consistent power supply. Authorities are being called upon to take action to address this issue and ensure a reliable power supply for the region.
