One Dead, Several Injured as Anti-Tax Protests Turn Deadly in Kenya
- Protests turn violent in Nairobi over controversial finance bill
- Police fire gunshots, one person reported dead, and several injured
- MPs shelter in parliament basement as protesters storm the building
Chaos erupted in the capital city as protesters took to the streets to oppose a new finance bill that introduces fresh taxes. The demonstrations turned violent, with police struggling to contain the situation in some areas.
As protesters marched towards the parliament complex, fires were seen burning and gunshots were heard. According to human rights groups, at least one person has been fatally shot. Some Members of Parliament (MPs) are reportedly seeking shelter in the basement after passing the controversial bill.
The protests are not limited to Nairobi, with demonstrations taking place in other parts of the country. The proposed finance bill has sparked widespread anger among Kenyans, with many demanding its complete withdrawal. While some measures were dropped last week, protesters are unsatisfied and are calling for the bill’s total scrapping.
Last week’s clashes between police and protesters resulted in at least one death, and the situation remains tense.
“The situation is tense, and we urge calm from both the protesters and the police,” said a human rights activist.
The government has yet to comment on the ongoing protests and violence.
