Hospital Crisis: Krachi West Municipal Hospital Faces Closure Due to Persistent Power Outages
The Krachi West Municipal Hospital in the Oti Region is on the brink of collapse due to chronic power outages, which have ravaged the facility’s operations and finances. Medical Superintendent Dr. Hilarious Gadze warns that the hospital may be forced to shut down its mortuary and essential facilities if the situation persists.
The hospital has spent a staggering GH₵70,000 on fuel to power generators, a temporary solution that has become unsustainable. Dr. Gadze emphasizes that reliable electricity is crucial for the hospital to function, as it relies on essential medical equipment and treatments that cannot operate without power.
“The future of the Krachi Hospital hangs in the balance,” Dr. Gadze stressed. “We urge the government to intervene and provide a sustainable solution to this power crisis.”
Administrator Raphael Tumawu echoed the concerns, highlighting the financial strain and equipment damage caused by the power outages. “Three air conditioners installed just a month ago are already faulty, and the sterilizer at the theatre is affected, making it difficult for medical professionals to attend to critical health conditions,” he explained.
Tumawu appealed to NEDCO and other authorities to take immediate action to address the crisis, emphasizing the urgent need to save the hospital’s finances and, more importantly, the lives of patients who rely on the facility for critical medical care.
