Furniture Shortage Forces Pupils to Lie Prostrate in Class at Babile D/A Primary School

Story Highlights
  • Pupils sit on floor or lie prostrate due to furniture shortage

  • Community appeals to MP and MCE for help

Pupils at Babile D/A Primary School in the Lawra Municipality are compelled to lie on the floor or sit on the bare ground due to a severe shortage of furniture, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) has observed.

The worst affected are lower primary pupils, who are forced to lie prostrate in the classroom, hindering effective teaching and learning. The situation has also discouraged many children from attending school, according to Mr. Zola Dabuo, Assembly Member of Babile Electoral Area.

While some parents have provided furniture for their children in upper primary and Junior High Schools, the school still lacks adequate furniture, with teachers forced to mark assignments under trees. The Regent of Babile, Mr. Vitus Dapilah Kadoe, expressed frustration that the Member of Parliament (MP) and the Lawra Municipal Chief Executive have failed to address the challenges despite promises.

The school’s structures are dilapidated, with broken windows and doors, and potholed floors. However, the School Management Committee has taken steps to fix metal doors to reduce access to the classrooms. The community is appealing to the MP and MCE, who are also parliamentary aspirants, to intervene and address the challenges facing the education sector in the community.

“We are still waiting for the office promised by the MP, and we appeal to him to fulfill his promise,” Mr. Kadoe said. “The furniture situation is taking a toll on parents and guardians, and we urge the authorities to intervene,” added Madam Theresa Lan-ire, a resident.
