Two Police Inspectors, Billy Akuaku and Gabriel Dorduno, have been sentenced to a total of nine years in prison by an Accra High Court for their involvement with the Western Togo Restoration Front (WTRF), a banned secessionist group in Ghana.
Akuaku, who made financial contributions to the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF), another banned organization, was sentenced to five years in prison and fined GH¢6,000. Dorduno, who also contributed financially to the HSGF, received a four-year sentence and a fine of GH¢3,600.
The court, presided over by Judge Mary Yanzuh, found the defendants guilty of being members of a banned organization and making contributions to benefit a banned organization. Akuaku faced an additional charge for accepting financial contributions from members of the Homeland Study Group Foundation.
The prosecution’s case revealed that the defendants, as members of the security service, were found to be part of WhatsApp groups created by high-ranking members of the banned organization to discuss security-related issues. The investigation discovered financial records and membership cards linking the defendants to the WTRF and HSGF.
The court handed down harsh sentences due to the defendants’ positions within the security service, emphasizing the need to protect the Ghana Police Service and the country.
The prosecution’s evidence showed that Akuaku and Dorduno were found to have contributed GH¢150 and GH¢100, respectively, to the HSGF. The defendants’ involvement with banned organizations and their financial contributions led to their conviction and sentencing.
