Uruguay launched their Copa America campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory against Panama in Miami, Florida.
Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez (25) secured the win with a volley in the 85th minute, adding to the lead established by defender Ronald Araujo’s opener in the 16th minute.
Left-back Matias Vina sealed the deal with a third goal in stoppage time. Panama managed a consolation goal through defender Michael Amir Murillo.
“We’ll take things one game at a time when it comes to Uruguay’s aspirations,” said manager Marcelo Bielsa, focusing on building momentum throughout the tournament. “With the talent we have, my hope is that each match will see us improve our performance. We need to see if I can build a winning team with these high-caliber players.”
Uruguay, fresh off impressive victories against Argentina and Brazil in World Cup qualifiers, is considered a strong contender in the Copa America.
In Group C’s other opening match, the United States dominated Bolivia 2-0 in Arlington, Texas.
Christian Pulisic, the AC Milan forward, opened the scoring with a beautiful curler in the 3rd minute and later assisted Monaco’s Folarin Balogun for the second goal just before halftime.
