“MTN is not Excluded from the 5G Rollout” – Ursula Owusu-Ekuful

The Minister of Communication and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has addressed concerns regarding MTN’s involvement in Ghana’s 5G rollout plans. Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, June 24, the Minister assured that MTN has not been excluded from the plans.

“I don’t know who created that impression. Somebody threw it out there, and nobody spoke to me or any of those involved in putting this consortium together before spreading this false alarm. It is not true,” she stated.

The Minister revealed that discussions are ongoing to offer all network operators, including MTN, the opportunity to take up equity in the Next-Gen InfraCo (NGIC) consortium tasked with implementing the 5G network.

The NGIC consortium comprises Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana.

The government announced its plans to introduce 5G within the next six months on May 30, sparking concerns about MTN’s absence from the consortium. The Minister’s clarification has put those concerns to rest.
