Unknown persons have stolen a 100kVA transformer belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in Bunso, Fanteakwa South District, Eastern Region, in a brazen act of theft. The transformer, valued at GHC 71,000, was stolen last week from the Bunso Police barrier, next to the police station, in broad daylight.
The transformer was stationed on the land of the CSIR-Plant Genetic Resources Research Institute, a reputable research institution, just a stone’s throw away from the police station and fire service command. Shockingly, the theft occurred while personnel were on duty, raising questions about the security of the area and the effectiveness of the police presence.
The stolen transformer has resulted in power cuts to the institutions and households in the enclave, including the CSIR-Plant Genetic Resources Research Institute, the police station, and the fire service command, for over a week. The power outage has disrupted the work of the research institution, affecting vital research projects and causing inconvenience to the staff and students.
The Eastern Regional Office of ECG is working tirelessly to replace the stolen transformer, which will come at an additional 20% cost, totaling GHC 85,000. Management is urging security agencies to be more proactive and vigilant to clamp down on criminal elements threatening stable power supply, and to prevent future incidents of transformer theft.
The incident is part of a growing trend of attacks on ECG installations, causing worry among officials, and highlighting the need for improved security measures to protect critical infrastructure. The stolen transformer has left residents and institutions in the dark, literally and figuratively, highlighting the need for urgent action to address the issue and prevent future occurrences.
