Clarke Rages After “Stonewall” Penalty Denied To Scotland
- Scotland's dream run at Euro 2024 ended
- Alan Shearer echoed Clarke's frustration
- Clarke also questioned the officiating
Scotland’s dream run at Euro 2024 ended in heartbreak after a controversial penalty decision went against them.
With the score tied and just over 10 minutes remaining, substitute Stuart Armstrong went down in the Hungarian box under a challenge from Willi Orban.
Head coach Steve Clarke was livid that a penalty wasn’t awarded. “The biggest point in the game is the penalty decision,” he said. “I need an answer. Why wasn’t it given? I don’t understand how VAR could look at that and say it’s not a penalty.”
Former England striker Alan Shearer echoed Clarke’s frustration, calling the decision “terrible” and a clear penalty.
Clarke also questioned the officiating, specifically the choice of an Argentinian referee for a European Championship match. “He’s from Argentina,” Clarke said. “Why is it not a European referee? It’s just my opinion.”
Scotland’s exit leaves questions about the denied penalty and the officiating hanging over a match that could have seen them progress to the knockout stages.
