Malawi Ex-Leader’s Step-Son Cleared Of Charges Over Migrant Deaths

Tadikira Mafubza, the step-son of former Malawi President Peter Mutharika, has been acquitted of human trafficking and aggravated manslaughter charges.

Mafubza and seven others were arrested in 2022 in connection with the deaths of 29 Ethiopian migrants found in a mass grave.

Despite the high-profile nature of the case, the evidence against Mafubza was deemed disjointed, leading to his acquittal after a 19-month ordeal.

While Mafubza’s lawyer welcomed the outcome, the Directorate of Public Prosecution expressed surprise at the ruling.

The acquittal marks a significant turning point in a case that had sparked widespread attention and scrutiny.
