Ken Agyapong’s Alliance with Bawumia Detracts from His Political Standing – Prof Kobby Mensah
Prof Kobby Mensah, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, has critiqued Kennedy Agyapong’s decision to join Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, suggesting it may harm rather than help his political prospects.
According to Prof Mensah, a political marketing expert, Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, did not consult his base before aligning with Bawumia, despite previous criticisms he directed at the Vice President. This, he argues, was not a politically astute move, as it could alienate his supporters.
“When I heard he had joined Bawumia in Kumasi, I wondered if he had consulted his base,” Prof Mensah remarked in a Twi dialect interview. “There was significant tension between their camps. Now, his base is questioning his decision. How can you make such a move without consulting your base? What political strategy is this?”
Prof Mensah highlighted that Agyapong now faces the challenge of reconciling his past criticisms of Bawumia with his current support, especially after vehemently opposing Bawumia’s candidacy during the NPP primaries.
“You cannot just switch from saying Bawumia can’t win to endorsing him as the best presidential candidate,” Prof Mensah explained. “He needs to carefully navigate this transition. How do you reconcile these contradictory positions?”
Regarding Agyapong’s impact on Bawumia’s campaign, Prof Mensah expressed skepticism: “I don’t believe he enhances Bawumia’s campaign; rather, he detracts from it.”
In essence, Prof Mensah believes Agyapong’s abrupt shift may pose more challenges than advantages for Bawumia’s presidential bid within the NPP.
