Rehabilitation Works Begin On Nungua Interchange Project

The Department of Urban Roads (DUR) has initiated a three-kilometre remedial project to rehabilitate the stalled Nungua Interchange project in Accra. The project aims to ease road traffic and enhance accessibility for motorists and commuters.

Minister of Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, visited the site and directed the DUR to engage local contractors to repair deteriorated sections, reducing the hardships faced by motorists. He acknowledged the project’s inconvenience to motorists, commuters, and residents, emphasizing the area’s strategic importance due to its high population density and business activities.

Delays in the project, initially expected to be completed in February last year, were attributed to the ongoing debt restructuring programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The project achieved an 85% completion rate before the contractor’s departure, followed by significant road deterioration.

The three-tier interchange project is part of the 31-kilometre major road works, divided into two lots: the 14-kilometre Osu to Boade Junction and the 17-kilometre Boade Junction to Tema Community Three.

The government has committed to addressing setbacks in projects like the Takoradi interchange, Ashaiman, and Tema-Aflao roads, ensuring relief for residents. Work will commence upon reaching an agreement with the IMF and the Paris Club, and residents are urged to be patient.

The project’s completion is expected within two months, bringing much-needed relief to motorists and commuters in the area.
