The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has averred that his active participation and involvement in the annual Green Ghana Day is not for show but a true reflection of his appreciation of the significance of trees.
He noted that he has an in-built affection towards trees due to their importance.
“My participation in the Green Ghana Day is not for the cameras. I have some trees I have planted right behind this residence. I went to find one tampered with by some constructors working around and you should have seen what happened. Mess with anything but not my trees.”
His Majesty said this when the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, during a courtesy call on June 19, 2024, thanked him for his commitment and support to the annual Green Ghana Day Initiative of the government.
Otumfuo since the inception of the Green Ghana Day has taken an active role in leading the agenda and enjoining his subjects to follow suit. In the past four years, he planted his monumental trees at the Royal Golf Course in Kumasi where he undertakes his golfing activities each morning.
He told the Minister he inspects the trees each morning to abreast himself with their development- a testament to his commitment to them.
The Minister was accompanied by John Allotey, the Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, Martin Ayisi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission and other executives and also proposed a national dialogue on land administration in the country dubbed the “National Land Stakeholder Symposium”.
