The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) has expressed deep dismay over the Ministry of Health’s recent actions regarding their ongoing strike.
The union initiated a nationwide strike on June 17, 2024, citing inadequate conditions of service despite prolonged negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC). They labeled the Ministry’s latest communication, urging them to end the strike and resume negotiations, as “appalling.”
Dr. Franklyn Armah, First Vice Chairman of MELPWU, criticized the Ministry’s approach, noting that the statement was issued publicly rather than directly addressing the union.
He emphasized that the union had formally notified the Ministry of their intentions beforehand, making the Ministry’s unilateral statement disrespectful and unfair.
Dr. Armah highlighted that the union had not been invited to any meetings aimed at resolving the dispute, further fueling their frustration with the Ministry’s handling of the situation.
“Our members are extremely appalled by the Ministry of Health’s actions. We formally notified them of our intentions, and instead of engaging with us directly, they chose to issue a public statement. This is wholly unacceptable,” Dr. Armah stated.
He added, “We have not received any invitations for crucial meetings to address our concerns. As a result, our strike action remains in effect.”
