The Ministry of Health (MoH) has made a passionate appeal to the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) to call off its nationwide strike, which commenced on June 17, 2024. The strike was declared by MELPWU after nearly two years of negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) failed to yield a Conditions of Service for its members.

The union expressed disappointment at the last meeting on May 31, 2024, which led to the decision to embark on industrial action. However, according to a statement from the MoH on June 17, 2024, significant progress has been made in the negotiations, with most proposed items agreed upon by the Government Negotiations Team.

The remaining items, including uniforms, Special Projects, Unsociable, and Communication allowances, are still under negotiation. The MoH acknowledged the challenges faced by the union and urged the leadership to exercise patience as the negotiations are expedited.

The Ministry assured the union of its cooperation and respect for their dedication to their members’ welfare. The MoH emphasized its commitment to finding a resolution to the impasse, highlighting the importance of the union’s contributions to the healthcare sector.

By appealing to the union to return to the negotiation table, the MoH seeks to find a swift resolution to the strike, which has potential implications for healthcare services nationwide. The MoH’s conciliatory approach aims to build trust and foster a collaborative spirit, essential for finding a mutually beneficial solution to the ongoing dispute.
