In a significant political development, more than 50 members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have switched allegiance to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Atiwa East Constituency of the Eastern Region.

The defection took place during the inauguration of the Atiwa East NPP Constituency campaign team for the 2024 elections, held in Anyinam, where staunch NDC members from Ahankrasu openly declared their decision to join the ruling party.

During the event, the defectors were outfitted in T-shirts featuring images of Atiwa East Member of Parliament Abena Osei-Asare and the NPP’s Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Prior to the campaign launch, supporters led by MP Abena Osei-Asare paraded through Anyinam in jubilant celebration, signaling the start of a vigorous campaign aimed at securing another term for the NPP.

The campaign, known as “breaking the 8,” symbolizes the party’s ambition to extend its tenure beyond the typical two terms. Minister of State for Finance and Atiwa East MP Abena Osei-Asare welcomed the defectors officially, urging NPP sympathizers to avoid split-ticket voting in the upcoming elections.

She emphasized that achieving “breaking the 8” requires unity and dedication, pointing out that the party’s achievements alone won’t guarantee victory.

Eastern Regional Secretary of the NPP, Tony Osei-Adjei, echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence in the party’s unity ahead of the December 7th polls.

Constituency Chairman Albert Nuama predicted a resounding victory, projecting that the NPP could secure up to 80% of the votes. He called for unity among party members, highlighting the need to overcome any lingering divisions from recent primaries.

The event drew party executives, supporters, elders, and former parliamentary aspirants, along with traditional and religious leaders, underscoring the significance of the defection and campaign kickoff in Atiwa East.
