  • The case has prompted discussions on legal and ethical responsibilities in healthcare

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has initiated an investigation into the case where a patient was discovered abandoned in a bush near Gomoa Ojobi, Central Region.

The woman, reportedly suffering from broken legs and mental illness following an accident, was discharged from Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital after two months.

She was then transported by ambulance to Gomoa Ojobi, purportedly her hometown.

Local residents observed the ambulance leaving the woman but did not intervene, assuming she would be attended to by caregivers. Tragically, unconfirmed reports suggest she was later found unresponsive and passed away.

Dr. Richard Selormey, General Secretary of the GMA, confirmed on June 17 in an interview that the association has launched its independent investigation into the incident. “We have commenced our processes to investigate the matter. We are collaborating with our regional members and stakeholders to gather comprehensive information,” he stated.

The GMA aims to contribute insights and recommendations to the Ministry of Health based on their findings.

In response to the incident, Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye has instructed the Ghana Health Service to conduct a thorough investigation within 30 days.

The Medical Director of Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital has already submitted an incident report to the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service.
