A looming disruption in tertiary education looms as three teacher unions gear up for industrial action starting June 21. Their frustration stems from being sidelined in the recent review of the Vehicle Maintenance Allowance (VMA) and similar benefits.
The Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) jointly declared their discontent on Tuesday, June 11, stating that the exclusion breaches principles of fairness.
Representing both senior and junior university staff, the unions argue that their exclusion from the VMA review—granted solely to the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG)—is unjust. They have long advocated for VMA adjustments and demand immediate inclusion in the recent changes.
Should the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission fail to address their concerns by June 21, 2024, the unions threaten to proceed with industrial action.
