Labour Commission Orders NIA Staff to End Strike
- NLC orders NIA staff to end strike.
- PSWU refuses to call off strike until June 13.
- NLC ruling focuses on procedure, not issues.
- Negotiations to continue on June 14.
The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the striking staff of the National Identification Authority (NIA) to call off their strike. The NLC held a meeting on June 12 to address the issue, listening to both the NIA management and the aggrieved staff.
After deliberations, the Commission ordered the staff to end their strike and return to work. However, the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) has stated that it will only call off the strike after meeting with its members on June 13.
John Sampah, Deputy General Secretary of the PSWU, expressed disappointment in the NLC’s ruling, saying it focused on procedure rather than the real issues. Sampah argued that the local union and mother unions are the same, and that other institutions have received additional allowances beyond the Single Spine Salary.
The NLC’s ruling also directed the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and NIA management to begin negotiations. Cephas Amada, Director of Salaries at FWSC, confirmed that negotiations will continue on June 14, with invitation letters already sent to the unions and NIA management.
Prof. Ken Attafuah, Executive Secretary of NIA, assured that the authority is committed to resolving the workers’ concerns through negotiations. Attafuah emphasized that the NIA has done nothing wrong and is willing to work under the leadership of the FWSC to address the issues.
