The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has raised alarm over the grim situation facing the country, emphasizing the urgent need for collaborative efforts to address pressing issues.

Speaking as Parliament resumed session on June 11, 2024, Bagbin expressed deep concern regarding recent events, particularly citing security issues during the limited voter registration exercise.

Bagbin expressed dismay at reports of individuals arming themselves with knives and guns merely to participate in the registration process, highlighting the precarious state of affairs. He further voiced apprehension about potential unrest following election outcomes, stressing the importance of immediate action.

In a poignant address, Bagbin underscored the plight of the youth, emphasizing the gravity of unemployment, homelessness, and a pervasive sense of hopelessness.

He cautioned that failure to address these challenges promptly could lead to dire consequences.

In response to these concerns, Bagbin announced plans for Parliament to engage with various stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and transparent presidential and parliamentary election later in the year. This initiative aims to preempt any threats to the nation’s peace and stability arising from electoral disputes.

Bagbin disclosed that Parliament, in collaboration with religious leaders, would engage with key entities such as the Electoral Commission, law enforcement agencies, political candidates, and party officials.

The objective is to foster dialogue and consensus, thereby safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process and averting potential turmoil.
