Ghana’s Second Lady, Mrs Samira Bawumia, launched a new initiative, Africa Students for Climate Action (ASCA), at a Green Ghana Day celebration.

The initiative aims to empower students across Africa to fight climate change.

Bawumia, who is also the chairperson of the African Women and Children Conference (AFRIWOCC), emphasized the importance of including climate change education in the school curriculum.

She believes this will make students more aware of environmental issues and encourage them to take action.

ASCA is built on three main principles: education, inclusion, and innovation. It will focus on educating students from primary and secondary schools about deforestation and the importance of planting trees.

The Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Dr Eric Nkansah, applauded the initiative and echoed the importance of education in combating climate change.

He stressed the need for collaboration between different organizations to achieve this goal.

The Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ms Ophelia Mensah Hayford, highlighted the importance of Green Ghana Day in restoring and preserving Ghana’s natural environment.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator, Mr Charles Abani, also spoke at the event. He emphasized the importance of educating young people to become stewards of the environment and fight climate change.
