The Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as ‘Napo’, received a warm welcome from residents of Kumasi on Monday, with chants of “our incoming Vice President” echoing through the streets.
Napo, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, has been widely tipped by political experts to partner with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate for the December polls. The majority of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members, including leading figures, have thrown their support behind Napo to partner with Dr. Bawumia, aiming for a resounding victory.
Kennedy Agyapong, who contested for the NPP flagbearer position and lost, has publicly stated that he would only campaign for the party if Napo is made Dr. Bawumia’s running mate.
On Monday, Napo accompanied Dr. Bawumia to Kumasi for a three-day campaign tour in the Ashanti Region, receiving a rousing welcome wherever they visited. The chants of “Napo is our incoming vice president” were heard throughout the city, as Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team visited various locations.
Despite the widespread speculation, Napo has not commented on the possibility of him being picked as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate.
Sources close to Napo’s camp have revealed that his main ambition is to help Dr. Bawumia lead the NPP to retain power and lead Ghana to prosperity. Napo is widely regarded as the best-performing minister in President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, having excelled in two crucial ministries.
He played a key role in introducing the NPP government’s flagship program, the free Senior High School (SHS) policy, and has stabilized power supply as the Energy Minister, earning him praise for his exceptional performance.
