Ghana’s Minister of State for Local Government, Osei-Bonsu Amoah, has highlighted unplanned development as a major contributor to urban flooding.
In a recent interview, he emphasized the need for better planning and stricter enforcement to prevent future flooding disasters.
Minister Amoah pointed out a troubling trend: individuals purchasing land in undeveloped areas lacking basic services like water and electricity. These residents then expect the government to provide those very services after construction begins.
“They build without a plan and then expect the government to fix everything,” Amoah said. He stressed the importance of local authorities upholding their mandates and preventing construction in flood-prone areas.
The Minister criticized the lack of effective sanctions within local government structures. He believes this leniency allows unauthorized structures to be built in high-risk zones, straining resources for local assemblies.
Amoah urged Municipal and District Assemblies to take a proactive approach.
They should closely monitor construction projects and swiftly address unauthorized structures before they become permanent residences.
