- PSWU-NIA division begins indefinite strike
- Strike starts June 10 over poor working conditions
- Union accuses government of bad faith negotiations
The Divisional Executive Council of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), National Identification Authority (NIA) division, has declared an indefinite strike effective Monday, June 10, 2024.
The strike follows a unanimous decision reached during a council meeting on May 23, after the government failed to meet the conditions for the deferment of the strike action initially planned for March 24.
In a statement signed by Council Secretary, Kwabena Adu Kyeremeh, and Council Chairman, Francis Bangfudeme Nyuzaghi, the union expressed frustration over the government’s lack of good faith in the negotiation process, stating, “the condition for the deferment of the strike action was that the government, represented by the FWSC, and the management of NIA facilitate the negotiation and implementation of better conditions of service for staff of the NIA among others. However, the government has not shown good faith in the negotiation process.”
The union added, “the Divisional Executive Council has therefore resolved to declare this indefinite strike in response to the heightened agitation of our members on the need to embark on an industrial action to drum home our poor and demeaning conditions of service.”
As a result, all services provided by PSWU members at NIA District offices, Regional offices, Headquarters, and premium centers will be indefinitely halted, effective Monday, June 10, 2024, until further notice.
