The US has urged Israel to be “fully transparent” about an air strike on a Gaza school that reportedly killed 35 people, including 14 children.
The Israeli military claimed it had targeted a “Hamas compound” in the school, but Gaza’s government and witnesses denied this.
The US State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, called on Israel to release the names of the Hamas fighters it claimed to have killed, as well as any other details about the incident.
The Israeli army later released the names of nine militants it said were killed in the strike. The attack occurred at the al-Sardi school in the Nuseirat refugee camp, which was sheltering 6,000 displaced people.
Witnesses described a devastating scene, with bodies and debris scattered everywhere. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa, confirmed the attack and said many people were injured.
The US has seen reports of the high civilian casualty rate and is urging Israel to provide more information about the strike.
