Tension is escalating in Akyem Asuom, Kwaebibirem Municipality, Eastern Region, as chiefs and residents demand the immediate transfer of Police Commander, Superintendent Abanga Stephen. The calls for his transfer come amidst allegations of involvement in illegal activities, unprofessional conduct, and disrespect towards traditional leaders.
According to the Krontihene, Nana Boadi Amponim Abodade III, the Commander’s actions have sparked outrage in the community. Specific allegations include illegal arrests, inappropriate mediation of disputes, and involvement in galamsey activities. The Krontihene has appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to replace Superintendent Abanga Stephen immediately, citing a breakdown in trust and confidence in his leadership.
Residents have also expressed their anger and frustration, urging the IGP and President to remove the Commander and appoint a more competent replacement. They claim that the current situation has created a sense of insecurity and fear, and that a change in leadership is necessary to restore peace and confidence in the police.
When approached for comment, Superintendent Abanga Stephen declined, directing inquiries to the Ghana Police Service’s Public Relations department. The situation remains tense, with calls for the Commander’s transfer intensifying.
