Israel Commences New Military Operation in Central Gaza

- The Israeli military has initiated a fresh operation in central Gaza
- Residents in the affected areas have reported heavy bombardment
- Diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire and the release of hostages persist
The Israeli military has announced the initiation of a new operation in central Gaza, specifically gaining “operational control” over eastern regions of the Bureij refugee camp and the town of Deir al-Balah. This move comes amidst reports of numerous Palestinian casualties.
On Wednesday, the military stated that troops, supported by airstrikes, had launched the operation targeting “terrorists and terrorist infrastructure both above and below ground.”
Residents in the area reported heavy bombardment, with Médecins Sans Frontières confirming the arrival of at least 70 deceased individuals, primarily women and children, at a local hospital since Tuesday.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire and the release of hostages continue, with mediators from the US, Egypt, and Qatar convening in Doha and Cairo for discussions.
The US awaits a response from Hamas regarding a proposal outlined by President Joe Biden, while Qatar has delivered the plan to Hamas representatives, awaiting clarity from the Israeli government.
In response, Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh expressed willingness to engage positively with a proposal centered on ending the conflict and a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
However, Israel’s stance remains firm, with Prime Minister emphasizing no permanent ceasefire until Hamas is defeated and the hostages are released. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant declared that negotiations with Hamas would continue amidst ongoing military action.
The current military campaign began in response to Hamas’s cross-border attack on southern Israel on October 7, resulting in numerous casualties and hostages taken. Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reports over 36,580 deaths since then.
