The initiation of Ghana’s inaugural manganese refinery is slated to commence this August, as announced by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor.
Under the oversight of Ningxia Tianyuan Manganese Industry Group Company Limited, the parent company of Ghana Manganese Company (GMC), the refinery will be established.
This groundbreaking endeavor marks a significant milestone for Ghana, positioning it to leverage its manganese resources by adding substantial value through refining.
Minister Jinapor unveiled these plans during his address at the 17th West African Mining and Power Conference and Exhibition (WAMPOC/WAMPEX) in Accra on June 5th.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring that Ghanaians benefit fully from their mineral wealth, highlighting efforts to promote beneficiation, value addition, and local participation in the sector.
In addition to the manganese refinery, Jinapor highlighted the construction of a 400kg capacity gold refinery through a public-private partnership, further enhancing the value chain of Ghana’s mineral resources.
Michael Edem Akafia, President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, praised the significance of events like WAMPOC/WAMPEX, noting their substantial role in transforming prospects into tangible deals, with a conversion rate of 40%.
Acknowledging the support of sponsors, partners, and participants, Akafia stressed the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing in advancing mining and power development in the region.
The theme of this year’s forum, “The Mining and Power Hub: Driving Sustainable Investment Opportunities,” underscores the commitment to fostering sustainable development and investment in West Africa’s mining and power sectors.
