Desperate for a Child, Woman Fakes Pregnancy and Steals Newborn in Zebilla
- The vigilant action of hospital staff prevented potential mob justice against the suspect
- The infant has been rescued
- A local chief's tip-off led to the arrest of the alleged baby thief
A woman who pretended to be pregnant has been apprehended for allegedly abducting a one-week-old baby from Zebilla District Hospital in the Bawku West district of the Upper East Region.
The suspect was detained following a tip-off from a local chief in the vicinity.
The prompt action by hospital staff prevented the suspect from facing mob justice, and she has been relocated to Bawku where she remains in police custody, cooperating with ongoing inquiries.
Dr. Ayobi Abdul Rahman confirmed that the infant has been rescued and reunited with its distressed mother, assuring that the child is safe and healthy.
While authorities are withholding the identity of the accused baby thief, it is understood that she resorted to this desperate act due to societal pressures stemming from her inability to conceive after a year of marriage.
Reports suggest that she seized the opportunity to snatch the baby unnoticed by its mother, intending to pass it off as her own newborn.
However, her plan was foiled when the chief alerted the police, resulting in her arrest.
