- Mbappe's desire to lift the Champions League trophy remains unfulfilled
France star Kylian Mbappe expressed immense joy as his much-anticipated transfer to Real Madrid was officially announced on Monday evening.
The 25-year-old forward, set to depart Paris St-Germain when his contract concludes on June 30th, will embark on a five-year journey at the illustrious Bernabeu Stadium.
Securing an annual salary of 15 million euros (£12.8m), along with a staggering 150 million euro (£128m) signing bonus distributed over five years, Mbappe will also retain a portion of his image rights.
Taking to Instagram, Mbappe exclaimed, “No words can describe the level of excitement I feel right now! A dream realized. Thrilled and honored to join the club I’ve always aspired to be a part of.”
His addition to Real Madrid comes on the heels of their La Liga triumph and their historic 15th European crown, clinched by defeating Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final.
With Mbappe’s impending arrival, speculations arise of a new Galacticos era, as he joins forces with Brazilian talents Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo, recent acquisition Endrick, and English midfielder Jude Bellingham.
Having verbally committed to Real Madrid in February and confirming his departure from PSG in May, Mbappe leaves Paris as the club’s all-time leading goal scorer, notching an impressive 256 goals since his arrival from Monaco in 2017.
Throughout last season, Mbappe showcased his prowess by scoring 44 goals in 48 appearances, maintaining his status as the top scorer in Ligue 1 for six consecutive seasons.
Amassing seven Ligue 1 titles, with one at Monaco and six at PSG, as well as four French Cup triumphs, Mbappe’s club accolades are extensive. However, he has yet to lift the Champions League trophy, a feat he aims to achieve with a Real Madrid side renowned for its European success.
