His Royal Highness Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, on June 3, 2024, introduced the ‘One-Student-One-Tree’ initiative, a pivotal element of the government’s Green Ghana Project, orchestrated by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
The objective of the ‘One-Student-One-Tree’ initiative is to augment the government’s afforestation endeavors by involving students from secondary institutions, fostering a tree-planting ethos among Ghana’s youth, and raising awareness about environmental conservation.
At the Abuakwa State College in Kyebi, Eastern Region, the launch event witnessed the participation of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, alongside the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, who symbolically planted a tree to demonstrate their dedication to the cause.
Encouraging active engagement from the students, the Okyenhene emphasized the imperative of safeguarding the environment for future generations, drawing upon the wisdom of Ghanaian ancestors who revered and protected forests.
Minister Jinapor lauded the Okyenhene’s visionary leadership spanning over 25 years and highlighted the historical significance of the Green Ghana Project in mitigating climate change and preserving biodiversity.
The ‘One-Student-One-Tree’ initiative aims not only to plant trees but also to instill a sense of environmental stewardship in students, fostering a commitment to a sustainable future.
Eastern Regional Minister Seth Acheampong expressed optimism that the initiative would instigate a culture of environmental responsibility among students, ensuring a healthier and greener future.
With a target to plant 10 million seedlings nationwide on June 7, 2024, Green Ghana Day’s theme, “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow,” underscores the nation’s commitment to environmental sustainability, with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo leading the ceremonial tree planting in Accra.
