Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced plans to align Ghana’s import duties with those of Togo, aiming to curb smuggling and diversion of imported goods to neighboring ports.
Speaking to religious leaders during his two-day tour of the Central Region, Dr. Bawumia stated, “The Tema port will undergo full automation.” He revealed that the government will introduce a new import duty policy that will equalize duties at the Tema port with those at the Lomé Port, eliminating the need for smuggling.
“Ghanaian ports will not impose higher duties than those at the Lomé port. This is our stance; we will maintain equal duties as they are our competitors,” he emphasized.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted the government’s achievements, including the convenience of purchasing electricity units from anywhere, the implementation of digital national ID cards, and mobile money interoperability. He outlined his strategy to stabilize the local currency and ensure exchange rate stability through the Bank of Ghana’s gold-purchasing policy.
“My government will adopt a business-centric approach to enhance Ghana’s standing as one of the most business-friendly economies globally,” he affirmed.
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia announced plans to introduce a Credit-Scoring System by June, aiming to lower interest rates on loans for entrepreneurs and individuals with a positive loan repayment history.
He urged religious leaders to support and vote for him to lead the nation towards progress.
